Women and irony is still a taboo theme, just as woman and humor is. The price
for this is not being taken seriously, to a large extent.

BIRGIT JÜRGENSSEN

Monograph edited by
Gabriele Schor and Abigail Solomon-Godeaur

Austrian artist Birgit Jürgenssen(1949-2003) was one of the most outstanding feminist avant-garde artists in the world. Starting with the liberating potential of Surrealism, she developed a dialogue with her generation's discourse of social critique, leading to the production of a multi-layered, stylistically multifaceted kind of art in the late 1960s. The female body and its metamorphoses were the focus of her work, which was predominately made up of drawing, painting, and photography. Thanks to the Sammlung Verbund, the first monograph on her work will be available in November 2009. This richly illustrated volumes includes previously unknown pieces from the artist's estate, provides an analysis of Jürgenssen's autonomous position in art history, and examines her relationship with literature, psychoanalysis, and Structuralism.
